The Original Feast

My fondness for food, and the communal rituals that are so entwined with it, led me to the idea of an Ethical Feast.

There is much to celebrate in the achievement of a bountiful harvest...yet too much becomes gluttony. There is much wisdom in self-discipline (or autonomous regard, per Mary Graham), but too much tends toward nihilistic narcissism.

So, in the tensions between these tendencies, there is the ongoing rhythm of life and the ways in which we individually and collectively "surf" the fine lines between those strange attractors. This is the inspiration for an "ethical feast".

With the support of friends and family, we convened an open event in Rajasthan in late 2009. The program comprised three variations on how to come together and share time and space around a table of sustenance.

Here's the invitation that was sent out to 108 significant people in my network:

There are some photos and reports of the events themselves which I'll update here in due course.

The larger question is: shall we set another Feast?
